(Conditional Sentences)

C.

(

(1)

If the baby is a girl, we are going to call her Sunny.
(

(2)

What are we to do if it rains?
(

(1)

If you're going to the supermarket, you might bring me back some apples.(如果你去超級市場,請你替我帶一些蘋果回來。)

(2)

If you should be passing my house, you might (= please) return the book you borrowed from me.
(

(1)

(3) If you will get drunk every night, it's not surprising you will feel ill.
(

(4)

If they won't accept (or refuse to accept) a check, we'll have to pay cash.
(

(1)

a.

If you stop gambling, I'll stop smoking.
(

b.

If it will make you happier, I'll stop smoking.
(

b.

I'll marry you if it will do you good.
(

L.

“if you would (...)

(3)

Wait over there, if you wouldn't mind.
(

(4)

Pass me that box, if you would.
(

其中的“if you would”的含義相當於“please”,但顯得更委婉有禮。 如:

(1)

If you'd just sign the register.

(2)

If you'd put your address on the back of the check.

(3)

If you'd open your books.

N.

條件子句裡可以用would like來代替 want / wish 以表示更有禮貌 —— would likewant / wish之比較請閱 p.489-3如:

(1)

If you would like a ticket, I'll get one for you.
(

較:

If you like, I'll get a ticket for you. 

(2)

He can leave his car here if he'd like to.  (必須有to)
(

He can leave his car here if he likes. 

would like 之後的不定詞省略時必須保留 to,否則,將 would 去掉。

O.

(1)

If you should have any difficulty in getting spare parts, ring this number.

(2)

If these biscuits should arrive in a damaged condition, please inform the factory at once.

(3)

If you (should) happen to pass a baker's, pick me up a brown loaf, would you?

(4)

If you should be anywhere near the post office, please (or will you, will you please) mail the package.

(5)

I don't think he will call; if he should call, tell him I'll be back around five.

較:

I don't think he will call; if he calls, tell him I'll be back around five.

(6)

If he offers (or should offer) you the position, you should (or ought to) accept it without hesitation.

(7)

If you are invited (or should be invited) to join them, you must tell them that you are busy preparing for your examination.

Should you be invited... = If you should be invited... (詳閱 p. 613)

P.

條件子句可以用 should / ought to 表示“應該”的含義,也可用 may / might 表示“被允許”。 如:

(1)

If you shouldn't (or oughtn't to) do it, don't do it.

(2)

If I might (or may) go with you, I'll be a helper to you.

(4)

If I might go out for an hour, I'd go and meet my girl friend.

(2)

What'll happen (or What'll you do) if you can't find a cheap room?

(3)

Your mother'd be furious if she could (= were able to) see you now. 

(1)

不說:If you'd have come early, you could have seen him.
該說:If you had come early, you could have seen him.

(2)

不說:If you would've told me about it, I could've helped you.
該說:If you had told me about it, I could've helped you.

(3)

不說:If I'd have known, I'd have told you.
該說:If I had known, I'd have told you.

U.

“if it were not for”“if it had not been for” 的含義是 如果不是因爲,其作用是表示 因爲某一特殊情況改變了一切。 如:

(1)

If it were not for your idleness (or Were it not for your idleness), you would be a good student.
(

(2)

If it were not for his wife's riches, he would never be a president.
(

(4)

If it hadn't been for his brainlessness, the accident would not have happened.
(

(1)

It would be nice if you helped me a little with the housework.
(

(2)

Would it be all right if I came around at about five?
(

(3)

Would it matter very much if we arrived about ten minutes late?
(

(4)

I'd be grateful if you would (= were willing to) give me a little help.
(

(5)

AWill you give me a hand?

BIf I could, I would.

AIf you would, you could.

a.

I'll give you anything if you ask for it.

b.

I'd give you anything if you asked for it.

(1)

 I don't have a dictionary, but if I

 did  ()

, I would lend it to you.

 had   ()

(2)

He didn't go to a doctor, but if he

 had  ()

, the cut on his hand wouldn't have gotten infected.

 had done   ()

()

(a)

(1)

I don't have enough money, but if I

 did   ()

, I would buy that book.

 had   ()

           did = had enough money
           had = had enough money

(2)

I didn't know that you had never met my brother, but if I

 had (or had known)   ()

 had done   ()

 , I would have introduced you.

had (or had known) = had known that you had never met my brother

had done = had known that you had never met my brother

(b)

(1)

I have to go to class this afternoon, but if I didn't (or didn't have to), I would go downtown with you.
(

(2) I always eat breakfast, but if I didn't, I got hungry during class.
(

(3)

He is busy right now, but if he weren't (or wasn't), he would help us.
(

(4) It's not raining right now, but if it were (or was), I'd stay home.
(

美語中,比較偏重於符合文法而用 were / weren't 者多,用was / wasn't 者較少;英語中恰相反,用was/wasn't 者多,用 were/weren't 者則較少。

(c)

上述結構中的 “but if ...”
