Who hasn't heard of Harry Potter, Hogwarts,
or even quidditch
for that matter? Readers and moviegoers alike can't get enough of the world of wizardry1 created by J.K. Rowling. As a result, fans have taken the game of quidditch out of the pages of the Harry Potter series and brought it to life in our
physical world. In existence since 2005, Muggle quidditch was first played by students at Middlebury College in Vermont.
Just like in the series, there are three chasers, two beaters, one keeper, and one seeker in Muggle quidditch. The biggest differences are that playing is done on an oval2 field and the snitch is a player
dressed in yellow. To capture the snitch, the seeker has to
snatch the sock that hangs out the back of the runner's shorts3.
The year 2007
saw the first intercollegiate4 quidditch match, which received national media
coverage. Soon after, the International Quidditch
Association and the Quidditch World Cup were born. In November 2010, over 700 players from 46 teams participated in the competition held in New York City. Who knows? Muggle quidditch may even become an Olympic event in the future.
