二. 間接敍述 (Indirect Speech or Reported Speech)

1.

間接敍述的定義

將某人 (包括自己) 所說的原意,但不必一字不改,引述一遍,這種方式稱爲間接敍述 —— 間接敍述是不用引號的。如:

直:

She said, “I don't want to go.
(她說, “我不想去。”)

 

 

間:

She said (that) she didn't want to go.
(她說她不想去。)

 

(2)

直:

“Have you read my grammar book?” he asked.
(“你有沒有讀過我的文法書?” 他問。)

 

 

間:

He wanted to know (or He asked me) whether I had read his grammar book.
(他想知道我是否讀過他的文法書。)

 

(3)

直:

“Let's wait here till the rain stops,” she said.
(“我們在這兒等到雨停吧。” 她說。)

 

 

間:

She suggested that they (should) wait there till the rain stopped.

 

 

or:

She suggested waiting there till the rain stopped.
(她提議在那兒等到雨停。)

 

(4)

直:

“Could you come to dinner tomorrow night?” he asked.
(“明天晚上你來吃晚飯好不好?” 他問。)

 

 

 

“Thanks very much; I'd love to,” I replied.
(“非常感謝; 我很高興來吃晚飯。” 我回答。)

 

 

間:

He invited me to dinner the following night. I accepted with thanks (or I thanked him and accepted).
(他邀請我第二天晚上去吃晚飯。我謝了他並接受了邀請。)

直:

“If I were you, I'd pretend to be ill for a fortnight,” I said.
(“我要是你,我會裝病兩星期。” 我說。)

 

 

間:

I advised him to pretend to be ill for a fortnight.
(我建議他裝病兩個星期。)

 

(6)

直:

“What a nuisance! Now I'll have to do it all over again,” he exclaimed.
(“真討厭!現在我得要全部重做,” 他大聲說。)

 

 

間:

He exclaimed with annoyance (or with disgust) that he’d have to do it all over again.
(他生氣地大聲說他得要全部重做。)

直:

“Let me explain,” she said. “Don't be in such a hurry.”
(“讓我解釋,” 她說。“別這麽急。”)

 

 

間:

She begged him to let her explain and asked him not to be in such a hurry.
(她請求他讓她解釋,並請他不要那麽急。)

 

(8)

直:

“I can't go with you today,” said the guide, “but suppose you go by yourselves? It's quite a safe route.”
(“今天我不能和你們一起去,” 那向導說, “你們自己去好不好? 那是條十分安全的路線。”)

 

 

間:

The guide said he couldn't go with us that day but suggested our going (or suggested that we should go) by ourselves as it was quite a safe route.
(那位嚮導說那天他不能和我們一起去, 但由於那是一條十分安全的路線因而建議我們自己 去。)

 

 

 

“Suppose...?” 是表示 “建議”,詳閱 p.572-6。

直:

He said, “Good morning!”
(他說, “早安!”)

 

 

間:

He greeted (or wished) me a good morning.
(他問候我早安。)

 

(10)

直:

“What about going for a swim?” he said. “It's quite fine now.”
(“去游泳怎麽樣?” 他說。 “現在天氣相當好。”)

 

 

間:

He suggested going for a swim as it was quite fine.
(因爲天氣非常好, 他提議去游泳。)

 

 

 

“What about...?” 是表示 “建議”, 詳閱 p.343。

 

(11)

直:

“Don't walk on the ice; it isn't safe,” he said.
(“不要在冰上行走;那不安全。”他說。)

 

 

間:

He warned me not to walk on the ice as it wasn't safe.
(他警告我因爲不安全不要在冰上行走。)
