現在完成進行式的用法：

1.

敘述某一動作從過去開始一直繼續到現在仍在繼續之中或剛剛停止 —— 至於是否仍將繼續下去，見上下文義或當時情況當可知曉。此種含義的現在完成進行式都是和 for...，since..., all morning / day / week 等時間詞語用在一起。如：

(1)

You have been studying for four straight hours. Why don't you take a break?
(你看書已經連續了整整四個小時。你為什麼不休息一會兒?)

(2)

The telephone has been ringing for almost a minute. Why doesn't someone answer it?
(電話鈴聲響了差不多一分鐘了。為什麼沒人接?)

(3)

It is midnight. I have been writing for three straight hours. No wonder I am getting tired.
(現在是午夜。我已經寫了整整三個小時。難怪我越來越疲倦。)

(4)

Lili is talking on the phone. She has been talking for over a half an hour (or half an hour/a half hour). She should hang up soon. Long distance is expensive.
(莉莉正在打電話。她已經談了半個多小時了。她應該快點掛掉。長途電話是很貴的。)

(5)

I am trying to study. I have been trying to study for the last hour, but something always seems to interrupt me.(I think) I'd better go to the library.
(我想看書。過去這一小時我一直想看，可是好像總有事情干擾我。〔我想〕我最好是去圖書館。)

The baby is still crying. He has been crying for almost ten minutes. I wonder what's wrong.
(這嬰兒還在哭。他已經哭了差不多有十分鐘了。我不知道他什麼地方不對勁。)

It has been raining non-stop since last night. I wonder when it will stop.
(從昨天晚上開始雨一直下個不停。我想知道雨何時會停。)

A:

Do you see those people on that little sandy island? They've been waving handkerchiefs for the last half hour. I wonder why.
(你有沒有看見在那小沙島上的那些人? 這半個小時他們一直在揮動手帕。不知道為什麼。)

B:

They need help. The tide's coming in and very soon that little island will be under water. Have you been sitting here calmly and doing nothing to help them?
(他們需要幫助。潮水正在漲，很快地那小島就會淹沒了。你一直鎮靜地坐在這裡而不幫助他們嗎?)

A:

I've never been here before. I didn't know about the tides.
(我以前從未來過這裡，有關潮汐的事我不懂。)

2.

敘述從過去某時開始一直繼續到現在，但不再繼續下去的事情。——用進行式的作用是帶有濃厚的感情色彩，也就是強調此一動作或工作持續了 "那麼久" 或做得 "那麼辛苦"。如：

(1)

Oh, you have come at last！ I have been waiting for you for two long hours.
(啊，你終於來了！我等了你足足兩個小時。——現在你已經來了，我等你的動作當然是結束了。)

(2)

You are here！I have been looking for you long.
(原來你在這裡呀！我找了你老半天。—— 現在當然不找了。)

(3)

I'm so sorry I'm late. Have you been waiting long?
(很報歉我遲到了。你是不是已經等了很久?)

(4)

A:

You look tired.
(你顯得疲倦的樣子。)

B:

Yes, I've been working non-stop all day.
(是很疲倦，我工作了一整天沒停。)

(5)

Thank you so much for the binoculars. I've been wanting a pair for ages.
(真感謝你送的望遠鏡。我一直想要一副想很久了。)

(6)

I have not seen you for weeks. What have you been doing?
(我有幾個星期沒見到你了， 你〔這一段時間裡〕一直在做些什麼? —— 不談以後要做的事。)
