If you guessed that this festival was a strange way to celebrate the changing of the seasons, you would be greatly
mistaken. Held in Kenting, Spring Scream is an outdoor festival that focuses on music. The festival was the idea of two Americans, Jimi Moe and Wade Davis, and has been held annually since it started in 1995. The festival lasts from two to 11 days but
averages four days most years. Spring Scream started off with only
a handful of bands but now has around 200 acts1 each year.
The bands that perform at Spring Scream come to Taiwan from all parts of the world. Some of the favorites have been from Japan, Hong Kong, and the US, while local Taiwanese bands also share the stage with them. In fact, Spring Scream has been especially important in helping local underground bands get
exposure. It has also
put Taiwan
on the map of the international music scene2.
Over the years, Spring Scream has grown in popularity and
scale. Although Moe and Davis have said the festival is all about the music, there are plenty of other things to see and do. Spring Scream's
amateur film festival is a great place to start. There are also art exhibits3 and stalls4 selling all kinds of foods and goods. There are local and foreign DJs who help keep the party going. What's more, there is no place like Kenting to
catch up on some well-deserved beach time or surfing.
